SUN CAPITAL BUREAU
CARSON CITY -- Four-term Assemblywoman Sharron E. Angle, who led an unsuccessful drive for a constitutional amendment to limit property taxes, is going to run for the Republican nomination for Congress in District 2.
Angle has scheduled a press conference today (Wednesday) in front of the legislative building to announce her candidacy for the seat of Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., who is expected to run for governor.
Other GOP candidates already in the GOP race are Secretary of State Dean Heller and former Assemblywoman Dawn Gibbons, Jim Gibbons' wife.
Angle frequently voted against tax bills during the regular session. In her prepared statement, she said, "I fight hard for fiscal responsibility, representing the voice of the people of Nevada. Washington like Nevada has money, but they lack the will-power to control spending."
Jim Gibbons' congressional district includes all of Northern Nevada and a sliver of Clark County.
As a state lawmaker, Angle sponsored or co-sponsored bills on the state's Millennium Scholarships, a requirement that American history taught in public schools and increased disclosure of certain information to purchasers of residential property.
Last year she started an initiative petition to amend the Constitution to limit property taxes but failed to gather the necessary signatures.
Angle, 45, taught in a private school in Winnemucca for 25 years and at the community college for five years. She has published a novel "Prairie Fire" and said she helped start a crisis call hot line in Ely for troubled teens.
She currently manages a small business. Angle is a partner in Sweet & Associates which has a storage facility and mobile home park in Tonopah and also is a manager for some mobile homes in Sun Valley north of Reno.
Angle is a graduate of Wooster High School in Reno and has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nevada-Reno.
