Belmont on alert

A suspected case of a contagious respiratory disease has New York racing officials taking precautions to assure that Belmont Park is safe for the Belmont Stakes.

Already, a suspected case of strangles in one horse has delayed the arrival of Preakness Stakes winner Afleet Alex.

The 3-year-old son of Northern Afleet was scheduled to arrive Saturday at Belmont from Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, but the trip was delayed after a barnful of horses at the New York track was quarantined.

Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo has been training at Hollywood Park in California for the June 11 Belmont Stakes and was expected to be shipped to New York on Tuesday.

SEC keeps replay model

The Southeastern Conference is hoping to improve the Big Ten's successful model for instant replay.

The SEC completed details of replay at its annual spring meetings this week, adopting the same procedures used by the Big Ten last season but opting to use more sophisticated, touch-screen equipment.

Under the Big Ten system, all reviews and reversals came from the replay booth. Calls could be overturned only if there was "indisputable video evidence," and reviewable plays were more or less limited to those involving scoring, fumbles and possession on receptions.

Labor talks continue

The NHL and the players' association held small-group discussions for more than 10 hours Wednesday, again working on a review of revenue measurement and financial reporting issues.

The meetings were expected to continue with a larger group today as the sides try to find common ground on team revenues and how to associate them to a salary cap in a new collective bargaining agreement. -- Sun wire services
