Letter: Mayor’s recent actions abhorrent
Thursday, June 2, 2005 | 9:10 a.m.
My wife and I are completely shocked at the recent actions of Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman.
First, it was his message to a classroom full of children that if stranded on a desert island, his first choice for a possession would be gin. Now it is a more large-scale message to the entire community: "Hey, look, your mayor did a nude photo shoot!"
If this were any other public figure -- a teacher, a courtroom attorney or a judge -- they would likely face censure. Because it is the mayor, though, he gets a pat on the back and his picture in the newspaper as the "representative of the Las Vegas community."
What gives this man license to say and do the types of things that most of us would never teach our kids to do? Some may say he was only having fun with his nude photo shoot, but I, along with so many others, will stand and say that this man does not represent us or our values, and he does not have our support.
Why do we allow this public official to get away with such actions?
