Flood warning in effect along Humboldt from Rye Patch to Elko

Wednesday, June 1, 2005 | 8:22 a.m.

A flood warning remained in effect Wednesday along a 150-mile stretch of the Humboldt River from Rye Patch Reservoir east to Elko, where recent warm temperatures have sent runoff from the heavy winter snowpack pouring off the mountains.

A flood warning also was in effect for small creeks and streams in Pershing, Humboldt and Elko counties and in northern Lander and Eureka counties.

The National Weather Service said moderate flooding was occurring along the river from Carlin to Winnemucca.

While the Humboldt was below flood stage around Elko, it was just over its banks above Dixie Creek, at Palisade and at Comus. It was about 19 inches over flood stage near Carlin and Battle Mountain, causing moderate flooding.

In Winnemucca, the river was about 20 inches above flood stage and flooding was occurring between West Second Street and Golconda Street and along the Union Pacific tracks.

With no rain in the forecast, the river was expected to remain steady for a day or two, then begin falling, forecasters said.

In extreme northern Elko County, the Jarbidge was just above flood stage at Jarbidge and minor flooding was occurring.
