State law forces shuffling of Health Board positions

Friday, July 29, 2005 | 8:42 a.m.

The Clark County Board of Health has reshuffled, based on a new state law that changed its makeup.

The bill proposed by Assemblyman David Parks, D-Las Vegas, originally met with opposition from the board, but was amended so that the board stays the same size but some posts change.

On Thursday, the board voted to keep the same members in different jobs on an interim basis until new bylaws can establish selection process for the at-large positions created by the law.

Mary Jo Mattocks, formerly one of two Mesquite representatives, became the nurse representative. Susan Crowley, formerly one of two Henderson representatives, became the environmental health representative. Robert Eliason, formerly one of two North Las Vegas representatives, became the industry representative. Dr. Joe Hardy, formerly one of two Boulder City representatives, became one of two physician representatives, along with Dr. Jim Christensen.

Also on Thursday, board member Sherry Colquitt stepped down after 25 years. She will be replaced with a Las Vegas representative. A new Boulder City representative was sworn in, Councilwoman Karla Burton. And board member Stephanie Smith, a North Las Vegas councilwoman, took over the board chair that had been held by Las Vegas Councilman Gary Reese.
