Officer hit on bicycle at Red Rock dies
Friday, July 29, 2005 | 10:48 a.m.
A Metro Police officer died Thursday as a result of the injuries he suffered in a hit-and-run collision last week in Red Rock Canyon.
Officer Don Albietz was pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m. at University Medical Center, where he had been since the July 20 collision along State Route 159 in Red Rock Canyon.
Albietz, who was off-duty, lived nearby in Blue Diamond.
Truck driver Michael Reich, 27, allegedly drove away after hitting Albietz and was arrested Saturday on charges of felony hit-and-run and several misdemeanors.
People who knew Albietz said he cycled regularly and competitively. He was excited when he moved to Blue Diamond, a friend said, because it allowed him to be near Red Rock Canyon for morning rides.
