While at home in Madison, the Marine Reserve battalion is prepared to augment and reinforce the active Marine forces in case of national emergency.

Sailors deploy to Persian Gulf

Petty Officer 3rd Class Ronald Cunanan, son of Marie Lozares of Las Vegas, and Seaman William Warren, son of Linda Stephens of Henderson, have departed on a scheduled deployment onboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa, homeported in San Diego.

Tarawa serves as the flagship of Expeditionary Strike Group One. Cunanan and Warren are part of more than 5,500 Sailors and Marines in the Strike Group who deployed to the Persian Gulf.

Amphibious assault ships like USS Tarawa deploy throughout the world to maintain U.S. presence and provide rapid response in times of crisis. According to the Navy, they serve as a highly visible deterrent to would-be aggressors, and are equipped with the most versatile and powerful weapons available.
