LVCVA added to suit

Wednesday, July 27, 2005 | 10:48 a.m.

A federal judge Monday added the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to a trademark lawsuit over the "What happens here, stays here" slogan.

R&R Partners, the LVCVA's advertising agency, had sued a California clothier for putting "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" on a line of clothing.

R&R created the "What happens here" slogan for the LVCVA and had been defending the slogan. The advertising firm sued Dorothy Tovar, the California woman producing the line of clothes, and bought the rights to the slogan for $1 from the LVCVA.

R&R asked the judge to add LVCVA as a plaintiff in the case, and asked that Adrenalin Sports, a company that works with Tovar, be added as a defendant. The judge agreed and also allowed R&R to add a charge of fraud, alleging that Tovar did not properly secure her trademark.

A settlement conference in the case is scheduled for today in Reno.
