House OKs bill creating women’s suffrage holiday

Tuesday, July 26, 2005 | 9:41 a.m.

WASHINGTON -- The House approved a bill Monday to create a national holiday celebrating the women's suffrage movement. Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., introduced the bill earlier this month inspired by two Henderson grade school students.

Alice Paul, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, all well-known historical figures for their work in the women's suffrage movement, can thank fictional character Kathleen Bowen for the potential holiday.

Hannah Low, 8, a student at Glen Taylor Elementary came up with the idea for the holiday after reading Kathryn Lasky's "A Time for Courage: The Suffragette Diary of Kathleen Bowen," last fall.

Low and classmate Destiny Carroll, 9, started a petition calling for the holiday and sent it to Berkley's office.

Low and Carroll joined Berkley on the House floor earlier this month to introduce the bill.

The House approved the bill 378-0.
