Lifeguard Games to test local teams

The American Red Cross and Nevada Recreation and Park Society Aquatics Committee are co-sponsoring the 2005 Southern Nevada Lifeguard and Junior Lifeguard Games July 30.

The games will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Baker Pool, 1100 E. St. Louis Ave. near Maryland Parkway.

Participating lifeguard teams are limited to four members. The fee is $48 per team. Organizations may have a maximum of four lifeguard teams. Sponsorships supporting the event are available. The event is open to the public at no cost.

The competitions have been titled "Cardiac Relay," "Rescue Tube Relay," "Speedy Shallow Water Spinal Rescue," and "Running the Gauntlet." During these time-trials, attendees will watch as lifeguards race against the clock to check the conditions of swimmers in physical distress; contact emergency medical services personnel; perform CPR; keep injured individuals immobile or move them in the water; and assist paramedics by providing information.

Fundraiser planned for spay programs

The Petco Foundation will hold it annual Round-Up/Spay Today fundraiser Sunday through Aug. 14 at the six Petco stores in the Las Vegas area.

Each of Petco's stores will select one or more spay/neuter-focused charitable partners for this fundraiser, who will be the recipients (s) of the individual store's fundraising efforts.

In addition, 10 percent of all funds raised will be donated to the Petfinder.com Foundation to assist their spay/neuter efforts. Petfinder.com is the nation's largest and oldest online adoption community, offering a searchable database of adoptable companion animals.

Pioneer Day events scheduled

The sixth annual Pioneer Day Parade and Old-Fashioned Activities event will begin 9 a.m. Saturday at the Fox Ridge Park and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 410 N. Valley Verde Drive, Henderson.

The parade will honor Southern Nevada's pioneer history, which includes the 100th birthday of Las Vegas and the 150th anniversary of Mormons settling at the Old Mormon Fort. The event is free and open to the public. Call 896-7452.

Tips on helping the homeless offered

Mainstream Programs Basic Training, a five-part training series to help case workers for the homeless network with one another and serve their clients better is planned from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Pueblo Room of the County Government Center.

Look for future workshops on housing options, employment training programs, health care, legal issues and special populations.

TV brothers will help in fundraiser

Geoff and George Stults, the brothers and actors from the WB series, "Seventh Heaven," will appear at Blondies Sports Bar and Grill, inside The Shops in Desert Passage, tonight as celebrity guest bartenders to raise money for a local family.

The brothers will be on hand from 8 p.m. to midnight to raise money for Blondies employee Taryn Stigall, whose young sons Kaleb and Karter are suffering from cerebral palsy and pervasive developmental disorder. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Stigall family.
