China marketing campaign wins award

Friday, July 22, 2005 | 11:11 a.m.

The state's efforts to market tourism in China have been recognized with a national award.

The Nevada Commission on Tourism will receive a 2005 Odyssey Award from the Travel Industry Association of America in October for its efforts to develop a marketing program.

"When NCOT embarked on our mission to develop tourism in the huge China market, we did not emulate any models or forerunners because there were none," said Bruce Bommarito, executive director of the state agency. "We created our China marketing program and office from the ground up, and it took a year to obtain full licensing so that we could legally promote tourism."

Nevada is the only state with a licensed tourism office in the People's Republic of China, maintaining a staff in Beijing.
