Markling to head Enforcement Division

Wednesday, July 20, 2005 | 10:44 a.m.

Jerry Markling, a 34-year veteran of law enforcement, will head the 130-employee Enforcement Division of the state Gaming Control Board, the agency announced today.

Markling, who has been the chief deputy of the division for nine years, will succeed Keith Copher who is retiring after 24 years with the board.

Markling's appointment was effective Monday and Copher will remain with the division through Aug. 12 during the transition.

The new chief will be based in Las Vegas, overseeing offices in Reno, Carson City, Elko and Laughlin.

Markling, who will make $90,538 annually in his new position, said he has no immediate plans to change any policies in the division.

"We have been going down a good path under our previous chief and we'll continue on it," said Markling, who joined the Gaming Control Board in 1991 after serving 20 years with the Provo City Police Department in Utah and attending Brigham Young University.

Copher said he intends to help a friend with a private business after retiring from the Control Board.
