DMV begins accepting checks over Internet

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- Motorists can now pay the state Department of Motor Vehicles by check over the Internet.

DMV officials on Thursday touted it as a paperless alternative for renewing driver's licenses or vehicle registrations. It said it is the first Nevada state agency to use the technology.

"It's a fast, safe and convenient way to handle payments," DMV Director Ginny Lewis said. She encouraged customers to use this method.

Credit card transactions, previously the only payment option on the Web site, can cost the state several dollars each. She said electronic checks can be processed for less than a dollar by the state.

Lewis said the department will offer electronic checks as a payment choice at self-service kiosks and office counters within the next few months.

The Internet check paying system started July 1, and 258 motorists used it on the first day, officials said.
