Regulators fine two more casinos over beach bars

ATLANTIC CITY -- Big winners with gamblers, Atlantic City casinos' beach bars keep running afoul of state regulators.

The state Department of Environmental Protection has fined four casinos for either overstepping the bounds of their beach bar plans or failing to get approval before building the bars.

The seasonal bars, which operate between May 1 and Sept. 30, offer seaside drinking, snacks and live music on the sand. Since their debut in 1999, they have become increasingly bigger and more varied in their offerings.

Too big, in the case of Bally's Atlantic City. On June 30, the casino was fined $35,000 for making its Bikini Beach Bar bigger than it was supposed to be under the plan the casino submitted to the state.

The bar was also cited for leaving some structures on the beach after the summer of 2004 ended, according to Erin Phalon, a DEP spokeswoman.

Caesars Atlantic City, its sister property, was fined $17,500 for not dismantling all of its Sand Box beach bar after last summer. That fine was imposed Friday.
