Box in Mosque prompts arrest

Metro Police arrested a man who allegedly placed a suspicious box in a mosque Monday night near G Street and Washington Avenue.

The man was creating a disturbance at the Masjid As-Sabur mosque in the 700 block of Morgan Avenue about 8:25 p.m., Metro Officer Eric Roberson said. The box that had been placed in the building bore a note that said anyone who touched the box would die.

The Las Vegas Fire & Rescue bomb squad was called and found that the box did not contain any explosives.

Condo complex hit by blaze

Henderson firefighters put out a fire in a multiunit condominium complex near Wagon Wheel Drive late Monday afternoon. The fire was caused by a child playing with matches, fire officials said. No one was injured, and the damage to the condominium is estimated at $30,000.

Firefighters responded to the fire in the 2400 block of April Breeze Lane about 4:50 p.m. Monday. They found smoke coming out from the eaves and an attic vent. The fire apparently started on a balcony in a plastic container. The blaze was quelled in about 20 minutes after firefighters accessed a condominium above the one on fire.

The residents of two adjoining condominiums were evacuated, but only the residents of the apartment that were displaced. The American Red Cross and the Southern Nevada Burn Foundation were assisting those residents, officials said.

Suspect in beating death is ID'd

The 17-year-old boy accused of beating a man to death with a baseball bat June 24 has been identified as Kelvin Gerard Moore, authorities said.

The victim, 56-year-old Willie Roberts, was attacked at the Walnut Garden Apartments, 2855 N. Walnut Road, by someone demanding money that was allegedly owed to him, police said.

Roberts died July 6. Moore was arrested Friday and charged with murder, battery and robbery.
