Enron trial postponed

A U.S. Bankruptcy Court trial set to begin yesterday between Enron Corp. and Nevada Power Co. of Las Vegas and its sister utility, Sierra Pacific Power Co. of Reno, has been postponed until Nov. 7.
The trial will take up the case which led to a 2003 bankruptcy court decision to award Enron $336 million from the Nevada companies for terminated power contracts. That decision was vacated by an appeals court in October, which also ordered the new trial.
The delay puts the bankruptcy court date behind a Sept. 7 hearing before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. In that hearing the Nevada companies and other entities will argue that their contracts should be set aside because Enron was violating market rules when it entered into the deals.
