Jobless claims rise but still point to improving job market

Thursday, July 7, 2005 | 9:16 a.m.

WASHINGTON -- The number of new people signing up for unemployment benefits rose last week mostly reflecting layoffs related to temporary shutdowns at auto plants as well as school closings.

Even with the rise, the latest report on unemployment claims, released by the Labor Department today, suggested the job market continues to post improvements.

New applications filed for unemployment insurance increased by a seasonally adjusted 7,000 to 319,000 for the week ending July 2.

A "significant portion" of the increase was because of school closings for the summer holiday as well as some temporary closings at auto plants, a department analyst said. Each year around this time, auto plants shut down to retool production lines for new model cars and trucks.
