North Las Vegas has announced the appointment of Mike Majewski as the director of the city's newly created Economic Development Department.
The North Las Vegas City Council created the new department in April.
Majewski had served as manager of economic development under Jory Stewart, the planning and development director. Majewski will now report to City Manager Gregory Rose.
Majewski will be paid $118,392 a year to manage the day-to-day operation of the department. The department will focus on business attraction, retention, development, redevelopment, special projects and international investment, said city spokeswoman Brenda Johnson.
Council members supported the creation of the department, citing concerns the city may be lagging behind other communities in attracting business.
The city plans to promote its redevelopment area for investment as well as pursue additional sales of land by the Bureau of Land Management and oversee development strategies and promotions for the Cheyenne Technology Center along Cheyenne Avenue.
The office will see investment from foreign companies and will work with local firms to export products. The city will have a researcher gather up-to-date demographic data that companies seek on the work force and other parts of the city.
The department will cost the city $284,000 a year, officials said.
