County considers tax hike for police
Wednesday, July 6, 2005 | 9:46 a.m.
A sales tax increase meant to pay for more police officers in the Las Vegas Valley moved one step forward Tuesday.
Commission Chairman Rory Reid introduced an ordinance to amend the county code to increase the sales and use tax on Tuesday. The matter is now scheduled for a public hearing August 2.
Voters in November approved imposing an increase of up to 1 percent to hire and equip more police officers in the valley. The Legislature later enacted the measure, Advisory Question 9, which later became Assembly Bill 418 and was signed by Gov. Kenny Guinn.
Once in place, county officials estimate the increase could mean an increase of up to 200 more police officers each year, a total of 1,700 to 2,000 officers between 2006 and 2015, officials estimate.
