Editorial: An enduring bond
Tuesday, July 5, 2005 | 9:02 a.m.
Last week we came across a story by the Associated Press that was nothing short of inspirational, especially for anyone who is or has been married. John and Amelia Rocchio of North Providence, R.I., recently celebrated their 82nd wedding anniversary. This milestone in longevity is believed to have made them the world's longest-married couple.
"Patience and understanding will get you a long way, especially with your wife," John Rocchio, who is 101, explained to a reporter. When Amelia Rocchio, who is 99, was asked what kept them together all these years, she had a direct but simple answer: "Love."
In today's world, one that has been marked by way too many divorces and acrimonious breakups, it is comforting, indeed, to read about the Rocchios, whose love for each other continues unabated so many decades later.
