Letter: Continuing a mistaken war is a travesty
Friday, July 1, 2005 | 8:44 a.m.
How long is this administration going to continue to press the lie that we are in Iraq because we were attacked on 9/11? Iraq had no connection to 9/11. Perhaps the president needs to read his own 9/11 commission's report.
The idea that we are fighting terrorists there so we don't have to fight them here is so absurd, only the most gullible would buy it. Does anyone really believe that a full-scale war in Iraq can prevent a handful of Muslim fundamentalists from blowing something up in the U.S.?
Our presence is fueling the insurgency. More than 1,700 troops are dead and tens of thousands wounded. How could anyone have expected otherwise? We bombed, invaded and occupied their country.
Our military should be used to defend the United States. We were not attacked by Iraqis and Iraq posed no threat to us before the invasion. Now we're supposed to "stay the course" so the sacrifice made by those who were killed won't be in vain. To use the deaths of American troops in this unjustified war as a justification for its continuance is a travesty.
Support the troops! Bring them home now -- alive and unbroken!
