Charleston checkpoints
Friday, July 1, 2005 | 11:11 a.m.
Law enforcement agencies will conduct police checkpoints near Mount Charleston today through Monday night as part of the effort to prevent wildfires.
The main purpose of the checkpoints is "to ensure that people aren't going up there to light up fireworks," said Sgt. Chris Jones, Metro Police spokesman.
But authorities will also be enforcing other restrictions on Charleston and other parts of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.
All fireworks and charcoal barbecues are prohibited on Forest Service land. Gas grills are allowed and wood fires are only permit in fire pits in campsites.
