Letter: Casinos must pay a higher share

WEEKEND EDITION

January 29 - 30, 2005

At the meeting regarding the property-tax issue recently at UNLV, how come no one proposed an amended Proposition 13?

My suggestion is to create a 2 percent maximum property tax increase for all homeowners who are 65 and older. I am tired of reading that taxes must increase for everybody because of growth. That's hogwash. The people moving here and buying homes are also paying taxes. They pay to register their cars. They pay sales taxes. They pay property taxes.

Maybe it's time that the casinos paid a tax of 10 percent on their gross gaming revenues, instead of 6.75 percent. They are using the money they make in Las Vegas to build casinos all over the country, where they pay taxes of at least 12 percent.

When are our politicians going to jump off the casino gravy train and help the people who vote them into office?
