Henderson briefs for January 28, 2005

Some object to renaming parkway

Because delivery drivers, residents, and even city personnel are sometimes confused by the disjointed turn in Green Valley Parkway, Henderson is considering renaming half the street.

It was suggested by city engineers that the portion of Green Valley Parkway that runs east and west in the MacDonald Ranch and Westgate areas be dubbed Sunridge Heights Parkway to avoid confusion.

But the Henderson Planing Commission sided with businesses that prefer their Green Valley Parkway address and recommended that the city council not rename the street.

Dan Laliberte, a vice president with the Ribeiro Company that owns properties on the street, said the well-known address was a selling point with clients. He expected much of the confusion to be resolved once the perpendicular streets are blended together.

Only Commissioner Craig Burr voted against recommended denial of the rename. The matter will come before the City Council in a future meeting.

Cell phone tower receives approval

Sun City Anthem residents and Sprint settled on a contentious cell phone tower placement with an agreement put before the Henderson Planning Commission Thursday.

Favil West, a member of the Sun City Anthem Resident Board, said residents were initially afraid the 26-foot-tall tower to be built on a golf course would ruin their view.

After more than a month of meetings -- and considering alternative tower designs of a palm tree, pine tree, flag pole, or light post -- the residents agreed that if the tower is placed on the distant side of an adjacent maintenance building, is painted to match, and is not lit, it will be acceptable.

West said the some in the community had even come to see the tower as an asset that enhances safety by providing better coverage.

The commission unanimously recommended the item for City Council approval.
