Grants to benefit school programs

A local charitable foundation is now accepting applications for grants for programs to benefit students of the Clark County School District.

More than $50,000 in grant money will be divvied up into grants generally peaking at $7,500 for programs that benefit students in the areas of math, science, and technology, said Nevada Community Foundation President Bret Bicoy.

Schools, nonprofits, government agencies, museums, and any other organization with an appropriate program is encouraged to apply, Bicoy said. Application information is available at www.nevadacf.org and the deadline is Feb. 11.

Grants are available through the Edwin F. Wiegand Fund, which is managed By the Nevada Community Foundation, a collection of more than 120 funds and close to $30 million in assets.

Wiegand was a Las Vegas resident and heir to the Emerson Electric Co., Bicoy said.

"Mr. Wiegand was a man who had a great passion for learning and for children in our community," Bicoy said. "Given how his family generated their wealth, obviously math, science, and technology were very important to him as well."
