Letter: Use tax surplus to address needs

Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 | 8:49 a.m.

The writer of a letter you published Sunday used a gas station being overpaid as an analogy to justify Nevada's tax surplus rebate. This is a poor analogy, off the mark for citizens who see the greater good of educated kids.

Our government is ascribed with the authority to provide public infrastructure and services in the best manner possible. If there's a surplus from one activity and a shortage elsewhere, it's basic common sense that the surplus be reallocated to areas in need. It's about choices.

How bad does it have to get before the me-first, anti-tax ideologues recognize that poorly educated kids and mental patients roaming the streets equal an inferior society?
