Columnist Peter Benton: Exber reels in another player of the year award

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

Brady Exber, for the second consecutive year and sixth in the past seven, was awarded the Championship Division Player of the Year award by the Southern Nevada Golf Association at its recent awards banquet at the Rio Secco Golf Club. Exber won four times in 2004 -- the Hall of Fame Classic, the Rio Secco Amateur, the Casablanca Amateur and the Boulder City Team event, plus he placed second in the Southern Nevada Amateur.

"Besides his wins, Brady was, and is, a model of class and sportsmanship, both on and off the course," SNGA president Mark Kokowsky said. "We are extremely fortunate to have a champion like Brady representing our association in local, state, regional and national events."

Jim Bradley, described as a true workhorse, a chronic complainer, and an absolute character, was honored as the Net Division Player of the Year. (We wish this keen golfer every ounce of good cheer as he is shortly to undergo knee replacement surgery.)

Senior Championship Player of the Year honors went to the unassuming Bob Martin, with Lewis Shupe winning the Senior Net Division title.

Sue May, the SNGA's Director of Rules and Competition, considered it a privilege when introducing, in her words, "a good group of people -- the association's volunteer rules of officials. I emphasize the word volunteer because these are the people who show up at every tournament site at the crack of dawn, long before the first players arrive, and leave after the last score is posted.

"For most, this means an 8-10 hour day, sometimes in the rain, wind, and yes, even in some snow -- and other times during the summer months battling 110 degrees plus. I could not ask for a better group of rules officials or friends."

The volunteers include Margie Bowgren, Chuck Buys, Jerry Clark, Sherry Corsello, Charlie Floyd, Brian Foster, Robbie Robertson, Jack Rosebush, Bob Schindler, Lou Olliver and Jane Schlosser.

The 2005/2006 officers are: president, Mark Kokowsky; vice president, Lee Fair; secretary, Dic Lybbert; treasurer, Bob Schindler; and state directors, Mike Bridges and Tom Yamashita.

SNGA staff consist of executive director, Larry McGovern; golf house operations manager, Joan Stiles, USGA/P.J. Boatwright intern, Shonna Sargent; and of course, the irrepressible Sue May.

There are 82-year-olds, and then there are 82-year-youngs, and included in the latter category is the ageless Ted Maddox.

This avid golfer played most of his golf over the Palm Valley and Highland Falls layouts in Summerlin last year, which in itself is really not that newsworthy. What is newsworthy, however, is that this incredible fellow played an amazing 277 rounds of golf in 2004, with his lowest score being 82, (matching his age), while his highest was in the low 90s.
