Hyde Park band plans D.C. trip
Hyde Park Middle School's symphonic band has been invited to represent Nevada at the White House for The Salute America Celebration April 20-24..
A fundraiser car wash, bake sale and yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the school 900 Hinson St., near West Charleston and Valley View bouldevards, to raise funds to support the band and the upcoming trip. Donations for the yard sale are being sought.
The public is invited. Call 647-8525.
Workshop scheduled on teens' health
The HIV Impact and Prevention Project in collaboration with Southern Nevada AHEC and Las Vegas FACT will present a workshop 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cambridge Community Center, 3900 Cambridge St., Room 109-110, for parents and their teens.
The five-hour workshop provides an overview of health and social challenges experienced by middle and high school students.
Through hands-on exercises, role-playing, intense discussions, and individualized attention, parents and teens are introduced to a variety of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) intervention and prevention strategies and skills.
Both will learn what communication and negotiation skills work for them and why, and take away important information and materials they can use as a team working together in the home environment. Call 455-7385 or 453-3855.
Representative of spiritual teacher Sant Thakar Singh
will offer a three-hour course on Inner Light and Sound meditation beginning 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd. The free program consists of a one hour talk followed by two hours of instruction. Call (480) 998-3448.
