State, San Juan Pueblo agree on electronic bingo machines

Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 | 9:12 a.m.

SANTA FE -- The state and San Juan Pueblo have reached an agreement on electronic bingo machines after Gov. Bill Richardson wrote New Mexico pueblos to express concerns about such machines.

Richardson, in his letter to San Juan Pueblo late last year, expressed disappointment he wasn't informed about the planned introduction of the Class II machines. He contended they could destabilize current tribal gambling compacts with the state and compromise future ones.

Ron Lovato of San Juan Pueblo's Tsay Corp. had said the machines were intended to entertain gamblers, not circumvent the compact's provisions.
