Senator recuperates from surgery

CARSON CITY -- Sen. Maurice Washington, R-Sparks, has lost 30 pounds and is still recuperating at home from surgery for colon cancer.

Washington, now in his second term, said Thursday he will attend the State of the State message by Gov. Kenny Guinn Monday evening and added, "I'm looking forward to it."

The 48-year-old ordained minister will be chairman of the Senate Human Resources and Education Committee and vice chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee when the Legislature convenes Feb. 7. He is also a member of the Transportation and Homeland Security Committee. The session is scheduled to last for 120 days.
