Recall ballot text

Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 | 11:04 a.m.

The following is the text that will appear on the recall ballot:

Reasons for Demanding Recall: "When the residents of Ward 1 elected Janet Moncrief as its city councilwoman, we believed we would have someone who would reflect well on the honest, hardworking people who live here. Instead we got the following: The first sitting councilwoman to face a felony charge for perjury and filing false campaign documents; A councilwoman who faces a five-count indictment for offenses which carry a prison term of up to four years; A councilwoman who is inaccessible to Ward 1 residents and admits in a January 6 Las Vegas Review-Journal article that her own colleagues vote against her almost every time; A councilwoman accused of playing dirty tricks while campaigning against her opponent in 2003. Because councilwoman Janet Moncrief deceived the people of Ward 1 when she was elected, and the desire to spare further damage and emb arrassment to our neighborhoods, we hereby petition for her recall as Ward 1 councilwoman, Las Vegas, Nevada."

Officer's Justification of Course in Office: "The majority of you elected me to represent Ward 1 as your councilwoman. Now, a handful of wealthy individuals who have constantly relied on government favors want to overturn your vote. I have not nor will I be, in their pockets.

Issues: 1. Accessibility: My door is open to everyone. 2. 2. Effectiveness: Approximately 600 votes cast affecting Ward 1, only 3 - giving away city land, failure to close a strip club even after the owner confessed to bribing politicians, and rezoning residential land to a high traffic office use for a prominent local developer - have the influential prevailed. 3. Notable Accomplishments: a. Proposed and passed an ordinance restricting locations; thereby, the number of payday loan stores; b. Proposed and passed an ordinance to prevent car dealerships from test-driving on residential streets; c. Prevented car dealerships from encroaching into neighborhoods; d. Secured safety for neighborhoods from cut through traffic; e. Proposing a new ordinance to eliminate new billboards within the City. 4. Indictment: Reported in Review-Journal dated December 31, 2004, Judge is troubled by evidence that the Nevada Attorney General's Office is engaging in selective prosecution. There is a c! lear choice in this election: your interests, or special interests.
