Letter: Ensure all good students receive help for college

Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 | 5:42 a.m.

WEEKEND EDITION

January 22 - 23, 2005

This is in reply to the Jan. 18 letter from Kenneth Record, who said Millennium Scholarships should be awarded only to those students who achieve a B average in the "core" subjects of English, math and science.

So, "fluff" courses such as U.S. government, U.S. history, world history, health, computer science, humanities, foreign languages, technology and all other elective classes that are required for graduation should not be allowed to count toward a student's grade point average? These are classes that every college requires a student to have passed.

Thank heaven for Gov. Kenny Guinn and the Legislature for realizing that there are good students who need assistance for college other than the top 5 percent who receive the majority of the college scholarships, and the lower 25 percent who receive the bulk of government assistance mostly due to lower family income.

It's a wonderful world when all students with good grades are treated fairly when it comes to scholarship assistance.
