Letter: Lottery would solve schools’ funding crisis

I would like to address the sorry financial state of our public school system. We all have known for years how our system struggles to educate our students with out-of-date books, very poor libaries, not enough supplies -- so much so that the teachers themselves will buy for their students -- and not enough classroms for these kids.

The system every year has to get creative to figure out more ways to cut the budget even as the population explodes. Our state, city and citizens should be ashamed. It is truly pitiful.

In other states that have a lottery, the funds are used for their school systems -- and they are providing a good education for their youth. Why can't we have a state lottery? I really hope it's not because the casinos have so much clout that they would block that as a solution.

We really need to get focused on education in this city. It's time for this community to take action.
