Work to be done at Ash Meadows

Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005 | 9:09 a.m.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is asking for volunteers to cut cattails at Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Volunteers need to sign up by Thursday. They should call (702) 515-5453.

Ash Meadows is home to the Ash Meadows Amargosa pupfish and other fish, plants and invertebrates found nowhere else in the entire world.

The cattails are located in Crystal Spring, an 80-degree Fahrenheit warm stream.

Volunteers are asked to bring drinking water, a change of clothes, lunch, old clothing and waders, rubber boots or old shoes. The refuge may provide a few pairs of waders.

Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is located in Amargosa Valley, about 1 1/2 hours northwest of Las Vegas from U.S. 95.
