Lake Tahoe workshop set for Las Vegas

A series of workshops on the future of Lake Tahoe in Northern Nevada are scheduled for January at locations in the West, including Las Vegas.

A three-hour workshop allowing public participation is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 24 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Moyer Student Union.

The goal is to listen to comments and ideas from the public for a Lake Tahoe resource plan from 2007 to 2027.

Known as PATHWAY 2007, the planning process is a multi-agency effort that includes the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the U.S. Forest Service, the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection.

"We're embarking on an unprecedented program of public outreach," said Julie Regan, communication director of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

"We're asking for public participation at the Las Vegas workshop from people who care about Lake Tahoe and want to play a role in its future," Regan said.

More than three million people visit Lake Tahoe each year, almost a quarter of them from Nevada.

The workshops will create a collaborative vision for the lake, often considered the "crown jewel" of natural attractions in the state, said Rex Norman, Forest Service spokesman in the Tahoe Basin.

"Nearly 80 percent of the Tahoe Basin is national forest public land and the public locally, regionally and nationally has a tremendous interest in the future of its resources, land uses and the recreational opportunities the Tahoe Basin affords," Norman said.

Other workshops will be held in the Lake Tahoe Basin, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
