Last year: John Daly won his first PGA Tour title since the 1995 British Open, beating Luke Donald and Chris Riley on the first hole of a playoff. Daly hit a 100-foot bunker shot within 4 inches to set up his winning birdie.
Last week: Top-ranked Vijay Singh won the Sony Open in Hawaii for his 25th PGA Tour victory and 10th in his last 26 starts. He birdied the final hole to beat two-time defending champion Ernie Els by a stroke. Michelle Wie missed the cut for the second straight year, shooting 74-75.
Notes: The field features five of the top six players in the world, with Singh and Els making their third straight starts of the season, Tiger Woods returning from a one-week break and Phil Mickelson playing for the first time this year. ... Woods, the 1999 and 2003 winner, is coming off a third-place tie two weeks ago in the season-opening Mercedes Championships. The Buick endorser grew up in Cypress, 80 miles north of Torrey Pines. ... Mickelson won his hometown tournament in 1993, 2000 and 2001. ... Els, skipping the South African Open, is making his first appearance in the event. ... The final two rounds will be played on the South Course, site of the 2008 U.S. Open. ... The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic is next week in La Quinta, followed by the FBR Open in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Last year: Fuzzy Zoeller won the season-opening tournament, birdieing the final three holes for an 8-under 64 and a one-stroke victory over 2003 winner Dana Quigley.
Last event: Mark McNulty won the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup in late October for his second straight win and third of 2004. Tom Kite finished second, a stroke back.
Notes: Arnold Palmer is in the 37-man field along with Hale Irwin, Gary Player, Lee Trevino and Tom Watson. The 75-year-old Palmer is beginning his 52nd pro season. ... Craig Stadler, the Champions Tour player of the year last season, is coming off a ninth-place tie last week in the Sony Open. Kite and Peter Jacobsen also made the cut in the PGA Tour event. ... The Turtle Bay Championship is next week at Kahuku, followed by the Champions Skins Game at Wailea.

Last year: Trevor Immelman successfully defended his title on his home Erinvale course, winning by three strokes.
Last event: South Africa's Charl Schwartzel won his first European tour title, beating England's Neil Cheetham on the first hole of a playoff in the Dunhill Championship on Dec. 12 in Malelane.
Notes: North Ireland's Darren Clarke is making his first start since winning the Taiheiyo Masters on Nov. 14 in Japan. The European Ryder Cup star's wife, Heather, is being treated for cancer. ... The European tour will team with the Asian circuit next week for the Caltex Masters in Singapore, while the Sunshine Tour will shift to Sun City for the Dimension Data Pro-Am.
