Union training center fined

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has fined the United Carpenters and Joiners of America's Las Vegas training center $4,200, after citing the center for falsely claiming to be EPA-accredited to teach carpenters how to remove lead-based paint.

The EPA requires training facilities to be accredited before offering training on lead-based paint removal, the EPA said. The center had trained 15 students and issued three students certificates in how to handle lead-based paint materials.

The EPA said the violations at the center have been corrected. Officials at the training facility have until the end of the month to pay the fine.

Bill Irwin, executive director of the Carpenters International Training Fund, said the false claims were a "clerical error," which showed up on the certificates issued to students. He said the facility now outsources the training in order to comply with the law.
