Neighbors alert sleeping couple to house fire on northwest side

Alert neighbors woke up the occupants of a northwest Las Vegas house spewing smoke early this morning, saving the husband and wife and three dogs inside from any injuries, a spokesman for Las Vegas Fire & Rescue said.

A fire had broken out in the attic of the single-story, wood frame house at 6528 Penrose Lane while the couple was sleeping. But neighbors saw the smoke and pounded on the front door until the couple answered.

When firefighters arrived at 12:23 a.m. today, smoke was coming out the front door and flames were visible on the roof, Tim Szymanski, fire department spokesman, said.

The cause of the fire appears to be electrical, Szymanski said. Damage to the house is estimated to be about $50,000, he said.

Neither occupant could remember if a smoke alarm had gone off, he added.
