Former teacher makes deal in sex case

As part of a plea bargain, a 28-year-old former Chaparral High School teacher on Tuesday pleaded guilty to having sex with a 17-year-old student.
Kenneth Bruce Stacy pleaded guilty to one count of sexual conduct between a school employee and a pupil. Stacy, a former English teacher, had originally more serious charges -- two counts of sexual misconduct -- for allegedly having sex with the girl in July 2004 at his home, according to his arrest report.
In exchange for his guilty plea to the lesser charge, prosecutors also said they would not oppose probation at Stacy's March 15 sentencing, so long as he serves six months of his probation term in custody at the Clark County Detention Center.
Prosecutors have also agreed to recommend Stacy's sentence run concurrent to a October 2003 gross misdemeanor case of attempted grand larceny Stacy is facing before District Judge Jennifer Togliatti.
Stacy was given a suspended sentence of six months and placed on probation for two years for the attempted grand larceny but violated his probation by having sex with his student.
District Judge Jackie Glass reminded Stacy, who appeared out of custody in court on Tuesday, that despite the plea bargain struck by prosecutors and Stacy's lawyer, Glass will have the final say on his sentence. She said although the charge is probational she could sentence him to up to five years in prison.
Stacy had worked with the Clark County School District for a little more than two years prior to his arrest last year, district officials said.
