Courthouse locked down for search
The Henderson Courthouse was locked down for a short time Thursday morning while police searched for a man wanted for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, police said.
James Ferrell's girlfriend told police he had been acting erratically -- threatening suicide and putting a shotgun in his mouth, police spokesman Keith Paul said.
He allegedly assaulted her, then went to the courthouse, allegedly to find a man who had been arrested for stalking him. His girlfriend told police he took a gun and planned to kill the man, whom he thought was scheduled to appear in court, police said.
Officers found Ferrell unarmed inside the courthouse and the gun in his truck outside, Paul said. He faces domestic battery charges for allegedly hitting his girlfriend and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Officers in fatal shooting are named
The three officers involved in a fatal shooting Tuesday on Flamingo Road at U.S. 95 have been identified as David Garris, Sean Malia and David Dilullo.
Garris has been with Metro Police for six years, Malia for seven years and Dilullo for eight years. All three are assigned to the patrol division of the Southeast Area Command.
The officers fired shots at 28-year-old Jeffrey Gaddis after Gaddis allegedly pointed a gun at them following a robbery.
The officers are on paid administrative leave pending a coroner's inquest, scheduled for Feb. 25.
Porter doesn't get Ways-Means seat
Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nev., did not secure a seat on the House Ways and Means Committee as he had hoped.
The powerful committee controls tax legislation that could affect the state's gaming industry. Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., served on the committee when he was a member of the House, but Nevada has not had a member on it since.
Porter spokesman Adam Mayberry said the congressman knew as a member of Congress in his second term it would be a "long shot" to get on the committee, but still hopes to gain a seat in the future.
Porter will continue to serve on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Education and Workforce Committee.
Task force arrests meth lab suspect
Authorities on Thursday arrested a 28-year-old man wanted by Metro Police for alleged methamphetamine production.
Nicholas Brooks, who was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant charging him with methamphetamine trafficking and production, was arrested at an apartment complex at Stewart Avenue and Lamb Boulevard, authorities said.
He was arrested by officers with the Nevada Fugitive Investigative Strike Team, or FIST. The team is led by members of the U.S. Marshals Service and includes Metro Police, Nevada Department of Justice and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives officers.
Brooks allegedly had evaded arrest on Wednesday night when Metro officers sought him at a room at a hotel on Boulder Highway. The Marshals Service did not provide the Sun with the name of the hotel.
Metro officers seized a methamphetamine lab in the room Brooks allegedly had been staying in.
Meeting planned on firefighter careers
Teens and young adults interested in a career with Las Vegas Fire & Rescue can attend a two-hour recruitment meeting of the department's Fire Explorer program this weekend.
The meeting will be Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Training Center, 633 N. Mojave Road. It is open to anyone between the ages of 15 and 21.
18-year-old still in critical condition
An 18-year-old man remained in critical condition this morning following a head-on collision near near Bonanza High School on Thursday morning.
Metro Police said the Jerel Jones was traveling at a high rate of speed in a 1988 Ford Mustang on Del Ray Avenue when he came up on a slower-moving vehicle in the school zone.
Jones swerved left to avoid the car in front of him and ran head-on into a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling the opposite direction.
He was not wearing a seat belt and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was still undergoing treatment this morning in University Medical Center's trauma intensive care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The driver of the SUV, Nette Martinez, 39, was treated for moderate injuries.
