Letter: Now is time for Rumsfeld to go
Friday, Jan. 7, 2005 | 9:09 a.m.
Isn't it about time that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld bowed out gracefully? The mistreatment of the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay by some of our troops was hidden for quite a while, even though Rumsfeld and his top staff were aware of it. They were probably trying to avoid a huge scandal that would taint the White House. This is inexcusable.
Now, in his speeches to our troops in Iraq, Rumsfeld answers them very curtly and firmly. He avoids certain issues. A lot of the members of his Republican Party are criticizing his actions. On a recent trip to Iraq to bolster our troops' morale, he served them food and tried to sympathize with them. It was apparent to me that this was nothing more than a public relations spectacle.
There are many people who cannot be fooled by this man's actions.
