Major sewer overhaul begins under Las Vegas Boulevard

Work began Wednesday on the rehabilitation of an aging sewer line underneath one of the busiest parts of the Strip.

The project, part of a larger effort to rehabilitate several miles of sewer lines in the Clark County Water Reclamation District's service area, revolves around the repair of the sewer line on Las Vegas Boulevard between Stardust and Spring Mountain roads.

The rehabilitation consists mainly of cleaning and inspecting the lines, then feeding a composite liner into the pipes. Once in place, the liner is heated with steam to solidify it. Access ports are later cut into the liner to correspond to existing lateral pipes.

No water service is expected to be interrupted during the process. Bypass pumps were installed to keep water flowing, Marty Flynn, a spokesman for the reclamation district, said.

Rehabilitating the sewer lines is part of the county's more intensive capital plan process to improve the aging sewer lines. The large-scale project is expected to cost about $10 million a year for the next five years, Flynn said.

The ongoing leg of the project also includes about 2,200 feet of sewer on Paradise Road, he said.

The process is expected to continue through Jan. 24 and will keep the right southbound lane between Stardust and Spring Mountain roads closed Monday through Friday from 2 a.m. to 11 a.m. All other lanes will be open.

The reclamation district maintains more than 2,700 miles of pipeline in Clark County, portions of which have been in service for almost 50 years.
