Driver critically injured in head-on crash in school zone

An 18-year-old driver was in "extremely critical" condition this morning after a head-on collision near Bonanza High School around 7 a.m., police said.

Metro Police said the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed in a 1988 Ford Mustang on Del Ray Avenue near Torrey Pines Drive and West Charleston Boulevard when he came up on a slower-moving vehicle in the school zone.

Sgt. Tracy McDonald of Metro's Traffic Investigation Division said the teen then swerved left to avoid the car in front of him and ran head-on into a 2004 Chevy SUV traveling in the opposite direction.

McDonald said he did not know how fast the 18-year-old was traveling. The speed limit in the school zone is 15 mph.

The driver of the SUV, a 39-year-old Las Vegas woman, and her passenger suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Mustang, who police said was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to UMC.
