Columnist Elizabeth Foyt: Group celebrates year, helps nonprofit organization

SafeNest got a healthy boost from the American Institute of Architects' year-end celebration at Paris Las Vegas on Dec. 15.

Led by outgoing president Lendall Mains and Randy Lavigne, executive director for A.I.A.-Las Vegas, the evening was a festive toast to a successful year.

Guests enjoyed a cocktail reception and lively bidding at the silent auction tables, and were also generous in their donations of food, clothing and checks to assist those sheltered by SafeNest, which provides temporary assistance for victims of domestic crisis.

SafeNest representative Beverly Carlino Banta was seen thanking architect Doug Swisher and wife Lisa Dove-Swisher, joined by fellow A.I.A. architects John Klai (Klai Juba), Bill Snyder (Tate Snyder Kimsey) and Jane and Tom Krobe and Frank and Bonnie Martin (Martin & Martin Civil Engineers).

Seen in the crowd accepting best wishes on his recent election for a third term as A.I.A.-Las Vegas president was Robert Fielden (Fielden and Partners). Attending with Fielden were his wife, Jane, their son, Dr. Scott Fielden, and his wife, Jill, and the Fieldens' daughter, Laura Spina, and son-in-law, Lane Spina.

Fielden, along with Brad Schultz, chair of A.I.A.-Las Vegas, will help host the 2005 National Architecture Convention & Design Expo. Scheduled for May 19-21 at Mandalay Bay, the event will showcase the city to 25,000 conventioneers and vendors from around the globe.

Others present at the dinner included Karen and Steve Richardson, Maggie Allred, Ed Vance, Bruce Clarke, Phil and Laura Kelso, Elizabeth Stewart, Wade Simpson and Ed Kitrell. Proceeds garnered from the dinner and auction will assist the UNLV School of Architecture Scholarship Fund.

Oops!

Last week's column on the benefit event for The First Tee of Southern Nevada contained several errors and omissions.

Major sponsors generously contributing were Bobby McCrary, general manager of Fletcher Jones Lexus; Garry Goett, owner of Southern Highlands Golf Club; and Danny Gans.

Gans, the popular entertainer for whom the Danny Gans Junior Golf Academy is named, is an avid golfer who enjoys the sport with his three children. Feeling strongly about making the sport accessible to area kids, Gans has contributed more than $250,000 to The First Tee of Southern Nevada in the past four years.

Attending the charitable reception to assist the golf program for local children were former major leaguer Mike Maddux, now pitching coach of the Milwaukee Brewers; Nick Mamula, Stephanie and Mike Louden and Brien Davis.

The Danny Gans Celebrity Classic golf tournament, scheduled to follow the reception, was canceled because of rain and rescheduled for Feb. 28. The tournament will be held at Southern Highlands Golf Club.

Contact The First Tee of Southern Nevada at 433-0626 for details on the celebrity pro-am tournament or to learn about enrolling young golfers, ages 6 to 18, in First Tee of Southern Nevada's program.

All-star party

Sandy Peltyn hosted a New Year's Eve dinner party at her Green Valley home in the elegant Fountains enclave.

Culinary wizards Mona Orr and Isabel Pfeifer aided in the preparing of a sumptuous late-night meal. Guests included Jack and Nancy Weinstein (Tower of Jewels), Jimmy and Sandee Comito with his children Jamie and Courtney, and Phil Stamper (VIP Las Vegas).

Arriving with a singing Barbie doll and her own CD of new music for the hostess was Lara Janine, the voice of Mattel's Barbie doll and New Year's weekend performer at the Golden Nugget. With Janine was her agent, Ed Burt, also a producer at ValCom Studios.

Invited guests included composer-singer Pierre Jovan (formerly of the Divine Divas), Grammy Award-winner Dr. Larry Hart, Marty Monroe of "Inside Edition" and Dave Teuman of World Trade Center University (which offers accredited college degrees online).

Dancing and dining into the wee hours were Greg and Katerina Phelps, Isabel Colon with Richard Hutaker, Jim Gould, Dr. Toni Hart and Jared Rogers.

Christmas cheer

Christmas Eve was family time for Jeri Packe, her business associates and a host of friends at her Scotch 80s home.

With the help of Hollywood Props and two cleverly costumed elves, the rear rooms of Packe's spacious home were transformed into Santa's Workshop, a playland delight for visiting children.

Packe's son, Ashton, daughter-in-law, Jodi, their children, Abigail and Trevor, and Ashton's grandmother, Sue Tucker, welcomed arriving guests in the arched foyer. Guests included Wing Fong, Jean and Michael Delano (he appeared in the remake of "Ocean's 11"), Carolyn and Tom Dixson and Chuck Knoblauch, all-star second baseman and outfielder for the Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals.

Adding her sparkling persona to the party was Realtor Andrea Tomisch (Turnberry West Realty), who greeted fellow Stirling Club members "Bucky" James Buchanan and wife Gianna as they arrived in Bucky's gleaming new Bentley. With them were Gianna's parents, Rose and John Orlandi, who divide their time between homes on Long Island and the Las Vegas Country Club.

Seen spending time whispering Christmas wishes to Santa was Bob McElvey with Darlene Bearn and her daughters, Skyler and Savannah, Melody and Mark Trainor (Metro Audio Video) and son Mark Jr., attorney Tom Larmore with his wife, Colleen, and their children, Meghan, Danelle and Michael, and Bob Brokaw (Builder Bob General Contractor) accompanied by his wife, Lisa Lunt, and daughter, Aprah.

Dining at the bountiful table and later dancing to the Bob Baker Duo and pianist Billy Wallace were Susan Clark and Joe Bunch, Maxine and Maynard Kimbrell, joined by Andrea Lynn Feldman and John Walen, both of Jeri Packe and Associates Interior Design.
