SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- Kewadin Casinos and the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians has distributed nearly $1.1 million in its second 2004 gaming revenue disbursement.
The payments are part of 2 percent semiannual payments made to the seven counties in the tribal service area.
A total $1,098,295.62 was dispersed to various local governmental agencies in the year's second payment, the Evening News reported.
The money is slated for projects such as street construction, police and fire upgrades, the purchase of emergency response vehicles, recreation services, community programs and school projects.
The tribe also gave $20,000 to the 150th Anniversary of the Soo Locks Committee after receiving a request for a donation through the 2 percent payment program.
"They want to promote our area and show the state and the community how much the Soo Locks has impacted the Sault and the Midwest region of the United States," Tribal Chairman Aaron Payment said. "It's a great idea and we are very excited to support them."
