Motorist knocks man off bike

Police are searching for a motorist who knocked a 47-year-old man Las Vegas off his bicycle Sunday night and then drove away without trying to help the injured man.

Anthony Jcotto was in critical condition at University Medical Center late Sunday, authorities said.

He had been eastbound on Charleston Boulevard near 30th street when he was struck by a vehicle about 10:25 p.m. Sunday, Metro Police said.

Police are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or Detective Dennis Magill at 229-4060.

Candle blamed in condo blaze

Henderson firefighters blamed a candle for a Sunday morning fire that forced the evacuation of eight condominiums.

One woman and two cats were rescued in the fire about 8:30 a.m. on the 600 block of Cabrillo Circle near Center Street and Burkholder Boulevard, the Henderson Fire Department reported.

Firefighters found a mattress in a second-floor bedroom was ablaze and a woman trying to extinguish the fire. She was evacuated and the fire was extinguished within minutes, the fire department said.

Damage to the condo are estimated at $9,000.

Predator makes hard landing

One of the Air Force's remotely piloted Predator aircraft stationed at Nellis Air Force Base was forced to make a hard landing at the Indian Springs Auxiliary Field on Thursday afternoon.

The $4.2 million MQ-1B Predator made the landing at 12:48 p.m. at the airfield 40 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

The aircraft was flying a training mission. An investigation is under way to determine what caused the hard landing. The damage to the aircraft, assigned to the 11th Reconnaissance Squadron, is being assessed, Nellis officials said.

Two sought in sexual assault

Metro Police detectives are searching for two men wanted in an attempted murder and sexual assault of a 60-year-old Las Vegas woman that occurred at 2 a.m. Friday outside her home in the southwest Las Vegas Valley.

Police said they believe the victim was followed home and assaulted in her own vehicle by two men.

One man is described as a black man, 20 to 25 years old, clean shaven with short hair and about 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was wearing a white sweater, light-colored pants and had earrings in both ears, police said.

The other is described as in his early 20s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, clean shaven with short hair. He was wearing a white shirt, black pants and black shoes. He also was wearing a black varsity jacket with white sleeves and a gold collar. The jacket has the numbers 09 on the right sleeve and "Akademics" in black and gold on the back. There is a football under the lettering on the back of the jacket.

The men left in what witnesses said was a newer two-door white Monte Carlo with rear tinted windows.

New elections deputy named

Secretary of State Dean Heller has chosen a new deputy to take charge of Nevada elections.

Heller announced today that Ellick Hsu, 32, a Reno lawyer, has been appointed deputy secretary of state for elections. He will earn $79,885. Hsu previously was employed with the law firm of Lionel Sawyer and Collins where he specialized in real estate and business law.

He received his law degree in 2000 from San Diego's California Western School of Law. He received his bachelor's degree in animal physiology and neuroscience with a minor in economics, from the University of California-San Diego.

Under Heller, Hsu succeeds Ronda Moore, who becomes the coordinator in for the Help America Vote Act. Moore will be responsible for legal research and assistance in the state complying with the election act .
