Classical station again goes off the air

Monday, Feb. 28, 2005 | 10:58 a.m.

KCNV 89.7-FM went off the air again Sunday, the second time this year the classical radio station has lost its broadcast signal.

Warren Brown, chief engineer for KCNV, said snow on Mount Potosi -- home to the station's broadcast tower -- has made it impossible to determine the precise cause of the problem. However, he speculated it is weather related.

"I won't know until I get up there," he said. "But I would say it looks like ice probably damaged our antenna."

Brown said the snow on Mount Potosi prevents land access to the tower, so he has contacted charter helicopter companies about flying him to investigate the problem. He declined to offer a timetable on KCNV's return to the air.

In January the station lost its signal for more than three days when a chunk of ice damaged broadcast equipment.

Brown said KCNV is awaiting clearance from the Federal Communications Commission for a backup transmitter.
