TORRANCE, Calif. -- The Las Vegas Sun sports section was voted among the top 10 in the nation for 2004 in the 40,000-100,000 circulation category in judging by the Associated Press Sports Editors, which concluded Wednesday.
The Sun's was the only sports section of any Nevada newspaper named as a winner in the APSE contest, which is the top annual national competition in sports journalism. The APSE judging does not make specific rankings, but designates sports sections as top-10 or honorable mention.
The sports sections in the Sun's category to earn top-10 designation were Colorado Springs Gazette, Deseret Morning News (Salt Lake City), Forum of Fargo-Morehead (N.D.), Fort Myers (Fla.) News-Press, Mobile (Ala.) Register, Naples (Fla.) Daily News, Newport News (Va.) Daily Press, Times of Northwest Indiana (Munster, Ind.) and Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, Wis.)
The Boston Globe and Dallas Morning News were among seven newspapers in all four circulation categories to finish in the top 10 in daily, Sunday and special section judging. The Globe and Morning News compete in the over-250,000 circulation category. The other "triple crown" winners were the Hartford Courant, Palm Beach Post and Seattle Times in the 100,000-250,000 category, the Newport News (Va.) Daily Press in 40,000-100,000 and the Longmont (Colo.) Daily Times-Call in under-40,000.
APSE judges also select 10 finalists in various writing categories with a second round of judging to pick the winners next month. No writers from Nevada newspapers were named writing finalists.
