Rebels tied for first after one round

The 15th-ranked UNLV men's golf team shot a season-low 14-under-par 274 to tie for first place after the opening round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Wednesday at Leilehua Golf Course (par 72, 6,917 yards) in Wahiawa, Hawaii.

UNLV's previous low round of the year was 10-under at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate in Kahuka, Hawaii.

New Mexico also shot a 14-under to sit in a first-place tie with the Rebels. Arizona is in third at 10-under 278, while Texas Tech and San Diego State at 280 round out the top five.

Individually, senior Ryan Moore led the way for UNLV after shooting a 5-under 67 to put him in a three-way tie for second with SMU's Will Dodson and Colorado State's John Hayes.

Gant in fatal crash

Former major leaguer Ron Gant was involved in a fatal wreck in Atlanta. Fulton County Police said James Allen, 74, of Douglasville apparently was trying to make a left turn, cut into oncoming traffic and was struck by a sport utility vehicle driven by Gant. Allen died at the scene. Gant was not seriously injured, and no charges were expected.

Rebels set record

A Mountain West Conference record performance by the men's 200-yard medley relay highlighted action for UNLV on the first day of the 2005 MWC Swimming and Diving Championships at Oklahoma City. Jonathan Hugo, Patrick Adams, Joe Bartoch, and Brandon Nelms teamed to give UNLV the 200 medley relay title for the fifth time in the six-year history of the meet. With a time of 1:27.02, they broke the conference record they set last year (1:28.55).

Myskina denied

Former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez ended Anastasia Myskina's bid for a third consecutive Qatar Oprn title with a 6-4, 7-5 upset at Doha. Top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo and No. 2 Maria Sharapova also advanced to the quarterfinals.

More meetings

The NHL players' association will update agents Wednesday, one day after meeting with the rank and file to detail what happens next in the collective bargaining that brought a lockout and the cancellation of the season.
