CARSON CITY -- Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman made a visit to the Legislature Tuesday to watch the passage of a joint resolution commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of his city.
Sen. Bob Coffin, D-Las Vegas, who introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 5, said the "wonderful spirit of Las Vegas has never dimmed" and people don't realize the rich history of the city.
Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, said the city "gets better every year."
Goodman, who sat next to Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt, the Senate's presiding officer, said wherever he goes he spreads the "magic dust" of the "greatest city in the world."
"I seemed to remember that once you were the happiest mayor in the world. Now you're the happiest mayor in the universe," Assemblywoman Peggy Pierce told Goodman.
As Goodman stood to applause, Assembly Speaker Pro Tem Chris Giunchigliani, D-Las Vegas, joked, "Don't give him the mike."
Goodman took it anyway, explaining that he wanted to address the "members of the universe's greatest Assembly."
"There's something magical, something neon, something electric, something very special about Las Vegas," he said, adding that Centennial celebrations will be held all year, including a cocktail party for legislators Tuesday night at the Governor's Mansion.
"I can assure you there will be plenty of gin and any libations that you approve of," he said.
